How to read whale bets without falling into traps
A “whale” is a player who bets large amounts — tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. On Polymarket their trades are visible to everyone. But you need to read them correctly.
What a whale card shows
- Stake — how much the whale put into the outcome in total. Big players often buy in parts so as not to move the price, so PrognosX merges all parts into one position.
- Average price — what they paid on average. 86¢ means they think the chance is above 86%.
- Parts — how many purchases make up the position. Many parts in a short time signal a confident entry.
- Result now — how much the whale is making or losing at the current price.
Useful signals
- Several strong wallets on one outcome within a short time — stronger than a single whale.
- A bet much larger than usual for that wallet — the player saw something.
- The line moved after the entry — the market agreed with the whale.
Traps
- Expensive favourites. Buying at 95 cents risks $95 to win $5. One miss wipes out twenty wins.
- Hedging. A whale may bet one side here and the other side elsewhere. You see only half the picture.
- Late entry. By the time you see the trade, the price may have moved. Copying at a worse price loses in the long run.
- “Top by profit” shows only winners. Look at the losers too — whales have plenty.
What to do with it
Use whale bets as a hint where to look, not as an order. Compare with bookmaker and Kalshi prices, check the news and don't bet more than 1–2% of your bankroll. See the biggest whale bets today on PrognosX.
